XSEDE Startup Allocation Approved

Good news!

XSEDE has approved the Startup Allocation for the GISandbox.  We are working hard to get GISandbox up and running with the latest commercial and open source software. This allocation grants GISandbox users access to the following supercomputers and cloud resources:

1. Jetstream (Indiana University / Texas Advanced Computing Center)

Jetstream will host our Virtual Machine running JupyterHub, which will serve as the primary interface for GISandbox users.

2. Bridges (Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center)

Bridges will be a primary compute resource, which is designed for non-traditional high-performance computing (HPC) users like the GIScience community.

3. Comet (San Diego Supercomputing Center)

Comet will be another primary compute resource, which is also designed for non-traditional (HPC) users. As SDSC likes to say "HPC for the 99 percent".

If you are interested in using the GISandbox as a pilot user then please:
  1. Email Eric Shook ( with a short description of your research or teaching project, or
  2. Post a comment below with your project description and contact information and we will follow up with you.
We have several pilot projects lined up already so if you want to be at the cutting-edge of the GIScience and geospatial computing community, then please let us know.

We will be posting progress updates as we move forward in getting GISandbox operational so check back.

  1. I found a good site, the main thing is that here I am not cheating everything honestly honest top casino I sit play, have fun

  2. This is a nice and informative, containing all information and also has a great impact on the new technology. Thanks for sharing it

An Overview of Esri Cloud and Big Data Spatial Analytics Offerings Available to XSEDE

I'm excited to share the ArcGIS for XSEDE webinar hosted by the Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) and Esri (Full title: An Overview of Esri Cloud and Big Data Spatial Analytics Offerings Available to XSEDE). We had over 70 participants join the webinar and I had many requests for the recording.  Please share the presentation with anyone who might be interested.

GISandbox (the site you are currently reading) will serve as the 'core communication channel' for many of these GIS+XSEDE activities so please check back or subscribe to stay up-to-date with the latest information and opportunities. Of course, if you have questions or would like to get involved feel free to get in contact with the presenters or myself, Eric Shook (

Welcome to GISandbox!

Welcome to GISandbox.  A new play place for curious researchers and educators to explore the capabilities of Geographic Information Systems and Science (GIS) when coupled with High-Performance Computing (HPC) and Cyberinfrastructure (CI).

We will cover a broad array of topics and technologies spanning (on the geospatial side) GIS, spatial analysis, spatial modeling, agent-based models, and cellular automata as well as (on the computational side) high-performance computing, data-intensive computing, interactive computing, Python programming, and of course big data.
